FITC’s photography gallery exhibits works by both emerging and mature artists from Minnesota and out of state. These month-long dual shows represent many directions in contemporary photography. The Gallery is open to the public Mon.-Fri., 9-5 and Sun., 12-5.

Jane Wenger, a Chicago photographer, has focused her work on the human figure for the last seven years. Whether in the Self-Portrait (1976), Bald Head (1977), or Face (1980) series, her photographs treat the human figure in an expressionistic manner, achieving a disturbing power by a transformation of scale as well as by her intrinsic choice of subject matter. Wenger’s Face Series, to be displayed in FITC’s January show, is a close-up exploration of muscular tension in body-builders’ faces, as well as a reflection of their inner states of mental and emotional energy. Wenger has exhibited widely, including one-person shows at the Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago, IL), the Milwaukee Art Museum, and Foto Gallery (New York, NY).

The Daybooks of Edward Weston

In The Daybooks of Edward Weston (1965), Robert Katz uses Weston’s writings in his daybooks as well as interviews with two of his sons and his second wife as its sources. Weston’s work is traced from his soft-focus photographs of the late 1910s to his portrait of Point Lobos Beach done in the 1940s. Included are samples of Weston’s photographs done in Mexico, as well as portraits of his cats and his satirical and civil defense series.
