In the 1930s, Bernice Abbott told a friend she was about to take some photographs in the Bowery on New York’s Lower East Side.

“Nice girls don’t go to the Bowery,” the friend said.

Replied Ms. Abbott: ‘Tm not a nice girl. I’m a photographer.”

“Not Nice Girls,” now at Kelmscott Gallery, includes more than 60 photographs produced by women between 1930 and 1980, ranging from photojournalism to movie stills to contemporary photo-performance hybrids. Classic images by Diane Arbus and Margaret Bourke-White are featured, as well as works by Chicagoans Jane Wenger and Diane Schmidt.

The accomplishments of these “Girls” are profound-not only their technical achievements but their unflinching vision.
